Gotham Gazette needs your help to provide even better coverage of New York City -– by going to Albany. We have to raise $25,000 by the end of the year so we can open a state capital bureau with a full-time reporter. With your donations, we can be on the scene to tell you what's going on with the state budget, the debate over city schools and proposals to fund mass transit. Click here to make a tax-deductible contribution and send Gotham Gazette to Albany. And if you contribute $100 or more, we'll give you the environmentally friendly Gotham Gazette nylon tote bag.
Today's Lead Stories
Governor Supports Transit Recommendations
Gov. David Paterson signaled support yesterday for the major elements of a new plan to deal with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's budget gaps. The proposals, recommended by a commission headed by former M.T.A. Chair Richard Ravitch, would put tolls on the Harlem and East River bridges, enact a payroll tax on businesses and raise fares by 8 percent. The commission, which will reveal its report officially today, also calls for improved bus service. In comparison, the M.T.A.'s austerity plan, which was proposed last month, would have raised fares by 25 percent and drastically cut back bus and train service. Leaders of both legislative chambers are also showing support for raising taxes to support mass transit. For more, see Transportation Links in the News.
