By Ton polderman, Eric Brienen and Felisberto Mendes
2008, Syntax Media, Arnhem, The Netherlands
This color printed 60 pages booklet has been written with the same objectives as the well known Dutch book Medische Parasitology – handleiding bij de laboratoriumdiagnostiek, a publication of the Netherlands Society for Parasitology, published by Syntax media, Arnhem (2005). The current guidelines aim at improving the basic microscopic techniques used to detect eggs, larvae, cysts and oöcysts of intestinal parasites in the peripheral laboratory where molecular and immunological methods are not available. It came into existence as a collaborative project between Department of Parasitology of the LUMC in Leiden, The Netherlands, and the Catholic University of Mozambique in Beira in order to improve the quality of diagnosis in Beira, Mozambique.
The authors present an interesting mix of background information, helpful illustrations, warnings and laboratory instructions, description of procedures to aid the actual detection and differentiation of the most relevant protozoa and helminths in stool. This booklet can be used for training and can serve as a helpful bench aid in diagnostic laboratories in low income countries.
